This week I visited Paris....
I had precisely thirty hours there and returned to London on Wednesday night feeling
that I hadn't wasted a second of it.
I also came home feeling once again certain that Paris is probably the most beautiful city in the world....
it doesn't matter whether you "get" the French or if you like them -
or actually, it doesn't really matter either way to them what you think....
Parisian architecture is absolutely breathtaking....from the sheer scale of the buildings, the wide boulevards, the imposing and impressive monuments and the stunning views from wherever you stand in the city.
It's also the feel of the city and the people themselves....
Parisians are exceptionally well dressed, chic and elegant....
sitting outside a cafe on one of the main boulevards,
the people-watching does not compare to anywhere else in the world...
it really is something.
Sitting outside a cafe I saw two 60s-somethings deep in conversation,
chic, glamorous and beautifully dressed from head to toe -
they were Paris.
The most perfectly dressed person I saw though was a girl of 5 or 6...
walking along the boulevard hand in hand with her grandfather....
boots, woollen tights, the cutest beret you have ever seen and worn just so, scarf perfectly tied,
a gorgeous coat and dress....
total perfection and totally oblivious to our stares as she skipped along.
Just the gorgeous French exchange students that used to come to my school years ago with their perfectly tied Benetton jumpers, loafers and cashmere scarves - even at age 12 :)
I went to Paris to meet up with my lovely friend Kim once again....
in our 24 hours together we shared a wonderful lunch, a dinner and then breakfast....
all of them totally delicious....
the best onion soup with bread and melted cheese on top that I've ever had, bread with country pate, goats cheese, tarte au citron, butter croissants....
We gazed up at the beautiful stained glass dome of the Galeries Lafayette and I tried not to stare too hard at the incredibly beautiful model-type assistants (male & female) at the beauty counters!
We walked the Champs Elysees, climbed the Arc du Triomphe, wandered through the Tuilerie Gardens, drank the best chocolat chaud (hot chocolate) in the world at Cafe de Flore on the Boulevard St Germain, bought macarons at Laduree and drank lots of coffee in lots of cafes....
If you ever come to London and want to travel to Paris, I recommend taking the Eurostar train....
it's such an easy and civilised way to travel....
2hrs20mins and you go from the centre of London to the centre of Paris....
it's fabulous!
It's such a treat to just take a quick trip midweek and I know I am lucky to be so near to France....I've been to Paris many times but this was definitely one of my favourite trips.
Crisp winter sunshine bliss....

Those 30 hours in Paris sound like perfection - so glad that you had time with your friend Kim! I think you know how I feel about that Eurostar trip from London to Paris - it's the best! I so enjoyed that! How I would love to wander thru Paris again! Happy weekend, sweet lady! xxoo :)
ReplyDeleteI do love how easily accessible the Eurostar makes Paris from London. My last trip was a day trip in February - freezing and cold, but a great 12 hours. Your post has just made me start obsessing about booking another trip!
ReplyDeleteSimone, if you loved Paris you would also love Buenos Aires, which based a lot of its architecture and fashion sense on this city - people adore everything French. Leaving the Eiffel Tower out of it, your pics made me feel I could almost have been back home...

I've been to Paris twice. Once by coach and once by Eurostar and I have to agree Eurostar is definitely the way to travel. In fact on our outbound trip we were upgraded to first class and it was fantastic! Chamapagne and everything if I recall. I really want to go back to Paris for another visit simply because I am in love with photography now and wow, would that make a fantastic photography trip! I'd fill up so many memory cards! One day.....

ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the best 30 hours ever.... and I agree about the train.... it's so easy I don't know why I don't go every week! Have a wonderful weekend Simone... xv
ReplyDeleteOh Paris...how wonderfully romantic. I have always dreamed of going, and then one day an older friend went with his wife, and said not to bother, they hate Americans. This made me so sad, because he popped my bubble of excitement. Then I decided to keep the dream alive because what did he know anyhow!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the response encouraging me to keep my dream of Paris alive. This has brought me a newfound excitement I haven't felt in so long. Thank you, Thank You!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a fab time Simone. I love your images of Paris, and love that leopard clutch even more ;-)
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine that gorgeous little girl you describe dressed to perfection. They learn about "chicness" at a very early age.
I thought of you girls and your lovely O there together often over those few days...it is a beautiful time of year to go- the first time I ever visited Paris was November....
ReplyDeleteTravelling by Eurostar is total heaven- I will also never forget the first time we did that- walking out into Paris is just incredible- the thing of treasured books!
So glad you had a wonderful 30 hours!
Wonderful to do it with the lovely Kim and of course- nothing like doing it with your gal...x
